Dredging

June 25, 2008

I’m not done yet…..

Yesterday I read an article that there was an agreement signed officially to deepen the Delaware River, many cheered.  This $500 million dollar ( though it has been quoted as only costing $379 million dollars in some places) has promised to bring new jobs to the maritime industry. Ten Thousand jobs is what they are promising.

Here is why they are dredging( deepening the river)

1. The ships that carry imports don’t fit under the bridges of Philadelphia. So the Philadelphia government is claiming that millions of dollars are lost where we could be selling these japanese tokens, chilean grapes, etc.

2. Because of the ship proble, we are getting passed by on stuff.

Here’s what I say

1. We don’t need more stuff.

2. Dredging the river has an environmental impact that no one is really sure about yet and which I am sure will be conveniently hidden behind the idea that they are providing 10,000 jobs.

3.  I really don’t want any chilean grapes. ( I am probably guilty of this by association because I have no idea where the produce I get is coming from, but I have been thinking about fixing this and getting angry about the idea that all of the oil, meat, produce, etc.. is an import.

4.  Take your 500 million dollars and put it somewhere where it will make a difference to this city. Put it in the schools , put it in revitalizing the city, put it in family programs that can help people get out of the realm of poverty in the city.  Don’t throw it in the river.

5.  Pollution..pollution…pollution… Need I say more?
