Hunting Island

July 8, 2008

Not sure where to start on this one.  Hunting Island is a little tiny island located in Beaufort County South Carolina.  You probably have seen this, it is the location in which they filmed some of the scenes from Forrest Gump, most notably the Vietnam scenes, but I was reading further today and they filmed some of the scenes from when Forrest was growing up in Beaufort as well.

Beaufort is rural… there is nothing for miles and miles.  You may see an occasional shack selling local produce, but for the most part it is beautiful country. No shopping malls, no big restuarants, and no McDonalds for a good distance.

We camped right on the beach, and fell alseep and woke up to hear the ocean in our heads. Here’s a picture of the beach.  Pretty much deserted, this was one of the mornings we spent there. The sun was starting to wake up.

Why the Low Country?

July 8, 2008

As usual vacation is something we really enjoy planning and try to find those unique experiences that are not run of the mill. Usually most people know us by the adventures that James and I take. We might be swimming with sharks one weekend, or spending the night on the look out from cubans on a deserted island ( with the rats running up the palm trees).

We spend one vacation with Max and then a tiny one to ourselves. Usually we left the more adventurous one for when Max is away but decided this year to start to introduce him to our vacations.

We picked South Carolina for a couple of reasons. Its warm, there are beaches there, and I caught on to the kayaking bug there and still believe that its some of the best kayaking I have ever experienced. The wildlife is amazing and so I told James that’s where I wanted to go and left the planning up to him. He found us some magical places. Usually our vacations are so adventure packed and pricey that we decided to save a ton of money and camp. This narrowed it down for him as to our lodging requirements. I only wish I had taken a picture of the car as we backed out of the driveway. There was barely room for Max. I literally had to have him sit down and cram stuff around him. Also keep in mind that we were completely camping for ten days so we had to take a cooler, and we even had our kayaks strapped to the top of the car.
A day later ( we decided to stop in Virginia and get a good nights sleep), we were about 40 miles from Savannah Georgia, and an hour from Hilton Head, in a place that was the most magical Hunting Island.
